We overnight at one of the park's hiking huts located high on De Gama peak at Cape Point overlooking the Peninsula and the two oceans. By the time we arrive at the huts the park gates are closing and all the day visitors have left. We now enjoy the tranquillity that few people experience at Cape Point.
The hike itself consists of two different parts. On the first day we tackle the short section of 15kms , plus an extra 4 kms if we take in Cape Point itself. At the end of the day we arrive at the spectacular Cape Point at a time when the crowds have left, allowing us to enjoy the spectacular views in peace. We allow approx 7 hours for this first days hiking. This includes photo and refreshment breaks.
When we finally arrive at the overnight hut we can enjoy a warm shower and a barbecue dinner before sitting down on the veranda to enjoy the stunning views.
On day two the hiking distance is about 21kms. This terrain is flatter on the Atlantic side than it is on the False Bay side of the Peninsula and is therefore a bit easier on the legs. We allow approx 8-9 hours hiking on this day , including stops for refreshments and lunch.
On the tour we will hopefully have good viewing of a number of animal species including Baboons, Eland, Bontebok, Zebra, tortoises , plenty of bird species and (hopefully from a distance) some of the snake species found on the park. These include Puff adder, Cape Cobra and the harmless Molesnake And finally between June and October we should be able to see many Whales who visit our shores during this time. On top of this are the famous Fynbos plants that are found in an absolute pristine condition at Cape Point. There are 26 species of Protea alone in the park and altogether 2285 species of plants are found on the Peninsula.
Note : You must have a relatively reasonable level of hiking fitness to complete both these days. Please do not attempt this if you are not sure if you can complete the distance involved. Although we do have "escape points" if required.
Note : we have the luxury of the park staff delivering our excess baggage, food supplies, wood etc up to the hiking huts whilst we are walking. On the walks you only have to take your day packs with enough water and snacks for the day.
